How to convert megabits per second to megabytes per second
One megabit per second equals 0.125 megabytes per second, so multiply the number of megabits per second by 0.125:
MB/s = Mbps × 0.125
Mbps = MB/s ÷ 0.125 (1 MB/s = 8 Mbps)
Example: 10 Mbps → 10 × 0.125 = 1.25 MB/s.
Going the other way, divide by 0.125, or multiply by 8; the megabytes per second to megabits per second converter does it for you.
Everyday values
| Megabits per second | Megabytes per second | For example |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 1.25 MB/s | a basic connection |
| 50 Mbps | 6.25 MB/s | a common home plan |
| 100 Mbps | 12.5 MB/s | a 100 Mbps plan |
| 300 Mbps | 37.5 MB/s | a fast fibre plan |
| 1,000 Mbps | 125 MB/s | 1 Gbps fibre |
When you need this conversion
Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), while download managers and browsers show megabytes per second (MB/s). One byte is 8 bits, so divide by 8: a 100 Mbps connection downloads at most 12.5 MB/s. In practice, protocol overhead and Wi-Fi usually reduce this by 5–20%.

About the units
- Megabit per second (Mbps): 1,000,000 bits per second, the unit internet plans are sold in.
- Megabyte per second (MB/s): 1,000,000 bytes (8,000,000 bits) per second, the unit download managers often show.
Both are units of data transfer rate. The conversion factor comes from the exact definitions above, so the calculator is exact; results are only rounded for display (up to six significant digits).
