How to convert megabytes per second to megabits per second
One megabyte per second equals 8 megabits per second, so multiply the number of megabytes per second by 8:
Mbps = MB/s × 8
MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8 (1 Mbps = 0.125 MB/s)
Example: 6.25 MB/s → 6.25 × 8 = 50 Mbps.
Going the other way, divide by 8, or multiply by 0.125; the megabits per second to megabytes per second converter does it for you.
Everyday values
| Megabytes per second | Megabits per second | For example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 MB/s | 8 Mbps | 1 MB/s |
| 6.25 MB/s | 50 Mbps | a 50 Mbps plan at full speed |
| 12.5 MB/s | 100 Mbps | a 100 Mbps plan at full speed |
| 125 MB/s | 1,000 Mbps | a 1 Gbps plan at full speed |
When you need this conversion
Multiply MB/s by 8 to get Mbps. If your downloads run at 11 MB/s on a 100 Mbps plan, you are getting 88 Mbps, which is normal once overhead is taken into account.

About the units
- Megabyte per second (MB/s): 1,000,000 bytes (8,000,000 bits) per second, the unit download managers often show.
- Megabit per second (Mbps): 1,000,000 bits per second, the unit internet plans are sold in.
Both are units of data transfer rate. The conversion factor comes from the exact definitions above, so the calculator is exact; results are only rounded for display (up to six significant digits).
