How eBay charges sellers

eBay's main selling fee is the final value fee, a percentage of the total amount of the sale: the item price plus shipping, handling and any sales tax eBay collects. For most categories it is 13.6% on the first $7,500 of each item and 2.35% on any amount above that. Trading cards, collectible card games and comic books have a lower rate of 13.25%. On top of that, eBay charges a per-order fee of $0.30 for orders of $10 or less and $0.40 for orders above $10. Store subscribers and some categories have different rates; enter your category's rate in the first field.

Final value fee = rate × min(total, $7,500) + 2.35% × (total − $7,500 if above)
Total = item price + shipping + sales tax
Per-order fee = $0.30 if total ≤ $10, otherwise $0.40

Worked example: a $30 item

An item sells for $30 plus $5 shipping, with no sales tax in this example. It cost $12, postage is $4.50 and packaging $0.50.

  • Final value fee: 13.6% × $35 = $4.76; per-order fee $0.40.
  • Total eBay fees: $5.16 (14.7%). Payout: $29.84.
  • Net profit: $12.84, a 36.7% margin. Break-even price: $15.14; price for $10 profit: $26.72.

Trading cards

A sports card sells for $100 with free shipping. At 13.25%, the final value fee is $13.25 and the per-order fee $0.40, so eBay keeps $13.65 and you receive $86.35. If the card cost $40 and a tracked shipping label costs $5, profit is $40.85, and the break-even price is $52.92. A $8 card sold with free shipping pays $1.06 plus the lower $0.30 per-order fee, $1.36 in all, which is 17% of the sale: low-priced cards lose a larger share to the fixed fee.

Why sales tax matters

eBay collects sales tax from buyers in most US states and passes it to the state, so it is not part of your payout. But the final value fee is calculated on the total including that tax. Enter the tax amount if you know it; otherwise the calculator slightly understates fees for buyers in states with sales tax.

  • Promoted Listings charge the ad rate you choose when a sale comes through an ad. Enter it in the ad fee field to see its effect on profit.
  • Insertion fees apply once you go over your monthly free listings.
  • Seller performance: eBay can charge a higher final value fee to accounts below its seller performance standards, so keep your defect rate low.
  • International sales may carry an extra international fee.

Pricing tips

  • Fees are charged on shipping too, so "free shipping" with a higher price and "price plus shipping" cost about the same in fees.
  • Bundle cheap items: one $20 order pays one per-order fee instead of several.
  • Use the target-profit field before listing to set a minimum Buy It Now price or a minimum offer you accept.

Setting a minimum offer

If you accept Best Offers, decide your floor before listing. In the example, the price for $10 profit is $26.72; setting eBay's auto-decline below that protects your margin, while auto-accept above your target price speeds up sales.

Free shipping or charged shipping?

Because the final value fee applies to shipping too, the fee on a $30 item with $5 shipping equals the fee on a $35 item with free shipping. Choose whichever presentation sells better.

Common mistakes

  • Calculating fees on the item price only. eBay includes shipping and tax.
  • Forgetting the per-order fee on cheap items.
  • Using the wrong category rate. Check the rate for your category on eBay's selling fees page.

Fee rates were checked against the marketplace's official help pages in October 2026 and are shown in editable fields. Marketplaces change fees from time to time, so check the current rates before pricing. This site is not affiliated with Etsy, eBay, Poshmark or Mercari.
