How to convert watts to horsepower
One watt equals 0.001341 horsepower, so multiply the number of watts by 0.001341:
hp = W × 0.001341
W = hp ÷ 0.001341 (1 hp = 745.7 W)
Example: 250 W → 250 × 0.001341 = 0.335256 hp.
Going the other way, divide by 0.001341, or multiply by 745.7; the horsepower to watts converter does it for you.
Everyday values
| Watts | Horsepower | For example |
|---|---|---|
| 250 W | 0.335256 hp | an e-bike motor limit in the EU |
| 745.7 W | 1 hp | one horsepower |
| 1,000 W | 1.341 hp | one kilowatt |
| 1,500 W | 2.0115 hp | a hair dryer or kettle |
When you need this conversion
One mechanical horsepower is 745.7 W. Electric motors, from kitchen blenders to e-bikes, are rated in watts; the EU limits pedal-assist e-bike motors to 250 W continuous power.

About the units
- Watt (W): one joule per second, the SI unit of power.
- Horsepower (hp): mechanical horsepower, 550 foot-pounds per second, about 745.7 W.
Both are units of power. The conversion factor comes from the exact definitions above, so the calculator is exact; results are only rounded for display (up to six significant digits).
