How to convert metres per second to kilometres per hour
One metre per second equals 3.6 kilometres per hour, so multiply the number of metres per second by 3.6:
km/h = m/s × 3.6
m/s = km/h ÷ 3.6 (1 km/h = 0.277778 m/s)
Example: 1.4 m/s → 1.4 × 3.6 = 5.04 km/h.
Going the other way, divide by 3.6, or multiply by 0.277778; the kilometres per hour to metres per second converter does it for you.
Everyday values
| Metres per second | Kilometres per hour | For example |
|---|---|---|
| 1.4 m/s | 5.04 km/h | walking pace |
| 3 m/s | 10.8 km/h | jogging |
| 10 m/s | 36 km/h | a fresh breeze (Beaufort 5) |
| 10.44 m/s | 37.584 km/h | Usain Bolt's average over 100 m in 2009 |
| 343 m/s | 1,234.8 km/h | the speed of sound in air at 20 °C |
When you need this conversion
Metres per second is the SI unit used in physics and in many weather services for wind speed. Multiply by 3.6 to get km/h: a 10 m/s wind is 36 km/h.

About the units
- Metre per second (m/s): the SI unit of speed.
- Kilometre per hour (km/h): 1,000 metres per 3,600 seconds.
Both are units of speed. The conversion factor comes from the exact definitions above, so the calculator is exact; results are only rounded for display (up to six significant digits).
