How to convert cubic metres to litres
One cubic metre equals 1,000 litres, so multiply the number of cubic metres by 1,000:
L = m³ × 1,000
m³ = L ÷ 1,000 (1 L = 0.001 m³)
Example: 0.2 m³ → 0.2 × 1,000 = 200 L.
Going the other way, divide by 1,000, or multiply by 0.001.
Everyday values
| Cubic metres | Litres | For example |
|---|---|---|
| 0.2 m³ | 200 L | a large chest freezer, roughly |
| 1 m³ | 1,000 L | one cubic metre (an IBC tote) |
| 10 m³ | 10,000 L | a small swimming pool |
| 15 m³ | 15,000 L | monthly water use of a small household, roughly |
When you need this conversion
One cubic metre is 1,000 litres. Water and gas bills are usually measured in cubic metres; 1 m³ of water weighs about one tonne.

About the units
- Cubic metre (m³): 1,000 litres.
- Litre (L): one cubic decimetre (1,000 cm³).
Both are units of volume. The conversion factor comes from the exact definitions above, so the calculator is exact; results are only rounded for display (up to six significant digits).
